Achieving your Goals: The Bigger Picture

It is a new day of a new month of a new year, and while fresh starts are great, picking up where you left off is sometimes best.

New Year’s resolutions are a really good way to set yourself on the right path, but with time, I have come to realize that they don’t always work (for me, at least).

What rather worked for me is working towards my goals, one day at a time. Today, I would rather cross things off my all-time bucket list, and not have any specific resolutions (you know, the typical “get fit”, “sleep earlier” and “travel more” stuff).

To resolve less and achieve more, here’s what you can do:

  • Don’t wait for the New Year. Start now!
  • Want to lose weight and get fit? Ditch the Monday rule and hit the gym today. Don’t like the gym? No problem. A few exercises at home or taking short walks are a great start (and slowly start changing your eating habits – drinking 2 additional glasses of water a day can start to make you feel better about your diet and eventually about yourself).
  • Sleeping earlier: every adult’s dream! An easy solution would be to sleep 5 minutes earlier each day. A couple of weeks later, you’ll be sleeping over an hour earlier without even noticing!
  • Traveling: they say if you haven’t traveled, you haven’t lived; I couldn’t agree more. Start saving for your yearly vacation. There’s this great 52 week money saving challenge that I did once: Print a weekly calendar on an A4 paper and glue it to a jar. The idea is to put an additional $1 each new week in the jar, crossing off the relevant week. $1 the first week, $2 the second week, $3 the third, and so on. By the end of the 52 weeks, you would have saved $1,378. The only thing left is decide on your destination!

Staying consistent

The whole idea of resolutions won’t work if you don’t remain focused and consistent. When you see the bigger picture, you won’t need to have resolutions anymore. You will be having a plan to get you to where you want to be. Just get on it!
