Could Biogas Be The Right Green Fuel For Your Business?

If you’re looking to make your business more eco-friendly, then one of the ways to do that is to look at some of the green energy alternatives that are out there. One that has been getting more attention lately as a direct replacement or supplement to fossil fuel is biogas. Here, we’re going to look at what you need to know about biogas, how it’s made, how it’s used, and whether it might be right for your business.

What exactly is biogas?

Traditionally, we burn fossil fuels to keep the lights on and the machinery of the industry going. However, biogas doesn’t come from oil or any other fossil source, but rather organic materials, such as maize, rye, and landfill gas that are cleaned up for more environmentally friendly use. Also known as green gas or biomethane, biogas can be refined and transported through energy networks just like natural gas. This gas is largely produced by introducing specific bacteria to organic materials in an oxygen-deprived environment. The bacteria breaks down and digests the materials, and biogas is created as a result of the process. In many ways, biogas functions just like natural gas, making it a good fit for combustion-based energy systems as they exist.

How it might be a better choice for your business

Hopefully, the above explanation gives a good indicator of just how effective biogas is as a choice for the environment. However, aside from making your business green, you want to make sure that you can keep it running efficiently and economically, as well. Although there is naturally an installation cost that comes with any green fuel method, biogas can be much more cost-efficient once you have it fully installed when compared to traditional fossil fuel energy sources. This can allow you to lower the utility bills of the workplace. Furthermore, depending on where you are, you might be able to take advantage of government incentives to reduce the costs of installation to some degree.

Make your business clean in its fuel

Of course, aside from the potential benefits to your business, you want to consider the benefits to the environment, as well. Biogas production, especially RNG (renewable natural gas that has been designed to be used in place of fossil fuels), is a growing economy. RNG benefits include how it is contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions across the world, already by reducing the level of methane emissions in the atmosphere. This also reduces the pollution of the air from offsets that are common when burning coal, oil or natural gas. As such, this can reduce the prevalence of issues such as acid rain and lower air quality which can lead to respiratory issues. Biogas is not only a cleaner energy source, it can literally lead to cleaner air, too.

How attainable is it?

One of the common (and understandable) concerns revolving around biogas and any green energy source is how likely it is to receive the same level of support, or more, in the coming years. You don’t want to invest in making your business green only for the infrastructure supporting you to collapse, leaving you unable to upgrade or get replacement parts for your installations. However, the good news is that biogas isn’t very likely to go anywhere, with its market size likely to be worth over $75 billion by 2030. It’s a growing market with plenty of new investors looking for ways to make biogas more readily available across the board.

Making your business more secure

As such, given that biogas is likely to see plenty more investment in the future, it’s good to know there is an alternative to fossil fuels, the prices of which have been subject to some major changes as of late. Green fuels are able to offer security from price fluctuations due to a range of changes in demand, supply, and infrastructural changes. With biogas, there are no such challenges and many who install biogas also own their own generation technologies. This also provides a lot more reliability. If you’re able to take care of your own energy supply needs, then any interruptions that would affect businesses running on traditional fuel sources aren’t going to apply to your business.

At the moment, the technologies used to create and make use of biogas are really starting to show some advancement, meaning that implementing this fuel in your business is becoming more and more possible. Keep an eye out for any providers near you that can help you make your business as green as possible.
