Dental Problems To Look Out For In Kids

Kids can encounter all kinds of different dental problems as they grow up. It’s important to know when to get treatment so that you can prevent any damage or further issues later on in life. Below are some of the most common dental problems to look out for in kids.

Teething issues

Every infant goes through teething. While complications are rare, it can be worth checking your little one’s teeth during this time. Some babies will develop cysts that persist after the tooth has erupted. These will need to be treated. Teeth can also erupt too early or too late, which can also cause problems – generally baby teeth shouldn’t erupt any sooner than 6 months or any later than 33 months. A dentist that focuses on pediatric dentistry may be able to diagnose any problems that you think your little one has and recommend treatment if necessary.

Cavities

Cavities are a sign of tooth decay. While they are more common in adults, many kids get them too – often as a result of not brushing their teeth properly or consuming too much candy/soda. It could be worth seeing a dentist to work out the best course of treatment. Cavities are not always accompanied by toothache, so it’s important to check your kid’s smile and look out for visual signs. Catching a cavity early could make it easier to treat – it could even be the difference between a filling and a tooth removal.

Gum disease

Some kids can also experience gum disease. This is characterized by red, swollen gums that may bleed. Gum disease is something that you’ll want to see a dentist about too – a deep clean with the help of a hygienist may be necessary, although it’s possible that gum disease may be able to be cleared up just by doing some regular brushing. Like cavities, poor oral hygiene is a common cause, however it can be due to other factors.

Overcrowding

Dental problems are common while kids’ adult teeth are coming through. Overcrowding is one potential problem that can happen. This is when there isn’t enough space in the mouth for all the teeth and so some end up overlapping others. Overcrowding can be treated by seeing an orthodontist. They may recommend that a dentist removes certain teeth and that braces are then fitted to straighten out the teeth. Fixing overcrowding is important not just for making the teeth look better, but for helping with cleaning and preventing other dental problems.

Misalignment

Kids can also develop wonky teeth – which may be as a result of them erupting at an angle, although it could also be due to habits like thumb sucking. As with overcrowding, misaligned teeth typically need to be treated by an orthodontist. Braces will usually be able to help the teeth return to a regular shape. This could be important if teeth are affecting speech or making brushing teeth more difficult. Slight misalignment may be possible to treat with clear braces such as Invisalign.
