Improving Colleague Retention In The Workplace

Hiring the right employee for the job is one thing, but the focus should also be on how to improve colleague retention in the workplace. No matter what the size of your business, this is a key aspect to ensuring success and the long-term longevity of your business.

Hiring the right employees

Attracting high-quality, dependable employees is the first step toward building a thriving business. Ensure that BPSS clearance checks are performed on all employees ahead of time and that you have the cream of the crop of staff on your books. From simple DBS checks to right-to-work statuses help to ensure smooth sailing going forward.

Encouraging positivity and goal-setting

Ensuring that staff members feel supported and valued is a key aspect of becoming a trusted modern-day employer. Positivity in the workplace and a general feeling of appreciation can assist with productivity and attendance. Setting targets such as achieving a certain percentage of sales or an increase in revenue for the next quarter can encourage teams to band together to achieve a common goal. Creating a relaxing space where colleagues can go to take five minutes to themselves or a canteen where food and drink is provided, will almost certainly aid productivity in the long run.

Regular review meetings

Arranging a regular review meeting is an excellent way to ensure that your employees are not only meeting your expected requirements but that they are happy and healthy as they do so. This also provides an option for the employer and employees to ask questions and check-in on mutually arranged targets.

Team building exercises

Love them or hate them, there’s no denying that team-building exercises genuinely work. Encouraging staff to participate in an activity that sees them work towards a common end goal can be fun and motivating. Some teambuilding exercises include:

  • Sporting events – simple sports such as crazy golf, tennis, or basketball could be a fantastic way of encouraging your employees to work together as a team.
  • Movie and theatre excursions – taking the team to see the latest blockbuster and enjoying the experience of watching a film as a group can help to encourage relaxation and bonding outside of work hours.
  • Inclusive events for all abilities – ensure that you are holding regular teambuilding events that are fully inclusive for all team members.
  • Supporting charities – bringing a team together with the common goal of supporting a chosen monthly charity is a rewarding way of encouraging excellent levels of team spirit.

Rewarding behaviours and aligning with the company strategy

The process of rewarding those who consistently go above and beyond to deliver results shows that you recognize and appreciate their level of hard work. Not only can a written or verbal ‘thank you’ go a long way, but there may also be company gifts such as a bunch of flowers or a gift card for exceptional circumstances. Staff who feel valued are far more likely to develop a sense of loyalty to a brand or business over time.
