3 Tips for Finding the Confidence to Make Better Decisions

In business, you have to make decisions each and every day. Some of these decisions are relatively minor, such as where to take your clients for lunch, whether to hire a Salesforce consultant, or what font to use in your sales presentation. But others have much more significant consequences, and the price of the wrong choice can be damaging to your career or business. If you make the wrong offer to a potential client or send out a controversial post on social media, you could end up in serious trouble.

You look at other successful business people you meet at networking events or follow on social media and you see these incredibly self-assured individuals who exude confidence. Surely these titans of industry would have no qualms about making huge business decisions without breaking a stride.

But there’s no reason you can’t be this person too. You just need the confidence to back yourself and follow through with your convictions. Being a more decisive person will be an enormous boost to your career, as it will help you foster relationships, close important deals, and build your reputation. And it will also be a benefit in your personal and social lives too.

So what are you waiting for? Follow these three tips and you will soon find within yourself the confidence needed to be a world-class decision maker.

Know your goals

It is much easier to make a decision if you know exactly what you want. Whenever you are called upon to choose between two options, ask yourself which one is most aligned with your goals. As a business leader, you should have short-term and long-term objectives that drive everything you do. These can be related to revenue, the size of your customer base, or brand awareness. And they should also be SMART goals, i.e. Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Sensitive.

Be prepared

If you are suddenly faced with an urgent decision, it can be stressful. And your decision anxiety may lead you to panic and make the wrong choice. That’s why it’s always important to be prepared in business. Be prepared for every possible eventuality and you will know what to do when the time comes to be decisive. Remember to remain calm, and take some time to think through each of the options and their consequences.

Believe in yourself

The reason some people are so good at making decisions is not because they are better than you in any way. It is because they have the confidence to pick a path and stick to it. If you believe in yourself, you can do it too. Remember that you have got to where you are in life through hard work and raw talent, and no one can tell you otherwise. If people are looking to you to make decisions, it’s because you have earned the right to be in this position. Eliminate any negative self talk and back yourself to make the right call. And if you’re not sure how to spark this confidence, just fake it until you make it.
