5 Safety Protocols Every Business Should Have in Place

Every place of business should have a workplace safety program in place. This program will help keep employees, guests, and visitors safe whenever they are on the business premises.

Workplaces without safety programs are likely to record higher accident rates, increased worker injuries, and the subsequent personal injury lawsuits that tend to follow.

A safe working environment is more likely to encourage worker productivity, lower injury-related costs and expenses, less worker absenteeism, better safety record, and lower employee turnover. As an employer, make sure that the following safety practices are implemented in place in your business.

Always Put Out Clear Maintenance Signs

If there are maintenance or cleaning activities going on, make sure that your workers know the importance of warning signs. This will prevent other people from walking into the areas that are undergoing maintenance, and sustaining injuries.

For example, if the janitors are cleaning the floors, make sure that they always put out the “wet floor” sign so that it’s conspicuously displayed. Also, make sure that the signs are placed a few meters away from where the activity is being carried out. This way, people can spot the sign early enough and avoid the wet spot.

Train Workers to Report Potential and Obvious Hazards

Create an environment where people are actually trained to pay attention to potential safety hazards, and put in place, protocols that will make reporting those hazards easy.

Most importantly, make sure that there are even more effective protocols in place to immediately tackle those hazards. This way, there’s little or no delay between when the potential hazard is identified and when it’s fixed or corrected.

Make Sure There’s Adequate Workers Compensation

Workers who are injured while on the clock deserve compensation. A workers’ comp plan makes this process a lot easier. Otherwise, they could file personal injury lawsuits against you and the firm.

For example, if you own a trucking or haulage company and one of your drivers gets injured in an 18-wheel truck accident, having an employee insurance plan will prevent you from having to deal with 18 wheeler accident lawyers if your employee decides to file a workers compensation or personal injury lawsuit against you.

Mandate Workers to Wear Protective Equipment

A key part of practicing safety in the workplace is mandating all workers to wear personal protective equipment (PPE). Oftentimes, workers forget to wear their equipment or selectively choose to wear some and leave the rest.

For instance, it’s not unusual for workers in a construction site to wear just hard hats and goggles while skipping their boots and coveralls. Ensure that all workers have their full PPE on when they’re on site. Remind them of the importance of the protective equipment and why they should have it on at all times.

Ensure Workers Get Some Rest

Even when you have deadlines, it’s still important that workers get adequate rest. This is important because tired and exhausted workers are more prone to making mistakes, endangering the safety of other workers and, doing subpar work.

This happens because they are less aware of their surroundings and have lower concentration. If you implement these tips in your place of business, you’ll find that your workplace will be a safer environment with fewer safety issues and better worker output.
