Why Learning About Poor Mental Health is Important

Mental health is finally receiving the attention it deserves. Sadly, it took the suicides of several prominent celebrities for the rest of the world to begin to recognize that poor mental health is, in fact, a problem. If you’ve never had a mental health issue, it’s understandable that you don’t know what it means or how to help someone. To help you better understand mental health, we’ve put together this handy guide on how you can learn more about it, so that you can help those you care about, and also know what to do in the event that you find yourself in a similar situation.

It’s not just a case of being down in the dumps.

Symptoms of mental illness are often characterized as unhappiness and crying excessively. While this is one sign that something isn’t quite right, there are numerous others that you may have overlooked:

  1. Being incapable of movement and feeling paralyzed by fear.
  2. Being unable to sleep, or being unable to sleep for an extended period of time.
  3. Unidentified rashes on the skin. Anxiety and depression can exacerbate the symptoms of certain skin conditions, such as psoriasis.
  4. Not wanting to be alone, but also not wanting to be near anyone.
  5. Lack of hope and a sense of failing.
  6. Thoughts of suicide.

Although there are many other signs of poor mental health, it is important to be aware of these in yourself or those who are important to you.

What can you do to help someone who is going through a tough time?

It can be difficult to help someone who is afflicted with mental health issues. Getting someone to acknowledge that they are experiencing difficulties can be a challenge in and of itself. The first port of call for anyone experiencing symptoms should always be their primary care physician. They can either give you medicine to help balance out the chemicals in your brain or refer you to a psychiatrist for more help. Until then, here are some things you can do to help:

  1. Being available to them, even if only for a quick chat. Friends can do wonders for mental health.
  2. Encourage healthier patterns of eating. Junk food, in particular, has been shown to have a negative impact on mental health.
  3. Alcohol and drugs can exacerbate mental health issues, so discourage their use.
  4. Give them the opportunity to talk about their problems, and show empathy for them, even if you don’t fully understand what they’re going through.
  5. Recommend websites and resources to give them the knowledge to help themselves. This page has promo codes for BetterHelp, which is an incredible resource for those struggling with their mental health.

Learn about suicide

Suicide is a big problem, and it’s sad to think that anyone on earth would want to kill themselves. As morbid as it may sound, learning about suicide can help you better understand what it’s like to take your own life if you’ve never felt that way.

Mental illness should not be kept a secret; instead, it should be discussed openly and honestly.
