How to Improve Safety and Security at Your Hotel

Running a hotel is an all-consuming, demanding task. This is a business that operates 24/7 with no breaks. Often, the times when other people are taking time off from work and relaxing are the times when your hotel is at its busiest.

As a hotelier, you will know that there are many factors that contribute to the success of a hotel business. Excellent customer service, beautiful rooms, and a warm welcome for any guest are just some of the areas a hospitality business needs to focus on. However, in addition to these key areas of your hotel’s success, there’s another factor that you may have overlooked. Your hotel’s security can play a major role in the customer experience of all your guests and plays a central role in the reputation of your hotel business. After all, a security incident or safety breach at your hotel can attract a significant amount of unwanted press attention and a barrage of negative reviews. Both of these are things that your hotel needs to avoid if it’s going to enjoy long-term success. So, making safety and security a priority is a must. The big question is, where can improvements to safety and security be made? Here are some ideas to get you started:

Improve Room Security

Improving the security for your guests in their room can help to guard against intruders and potential theft. One of the most effective ways to do this is by introducing hotel safes in each room. Many hotels have safes in their guest rooms, but the quality of these safes is what matters. Investing in high-quality safes will ensure your guests have the added peace of mind of knowing their precious belongings are safe throughout their stay. This is also a really effective way to help keep your hotel’s insurance claims for theft at a minimum and will save the time and hassle involved in calling the police, reporting thefts, and filing insurance claims.

Train Your Staff

Your staff can play a vital role in ensuring that your hotel is as safe and secure as possible. Ensuring that your staff are trained and attend refresher training relating to hotel security and safety is crucial to protect them and your guests from potential threats and danger.

Training should consist of a wide range of topics, from being alert to suspicious activity in the hotel, through to knowing what to do in case of a fire or other emergency situation.

Add Physical Security and Safety

Taking the safety and security of your team and your guests seriously is a must for any responsible hotelier. Adding physical security measures is a helpful way to do this. Having the hotel doors or even the exterior gates locked at night with security guards on duty to let returning guests in should help to prevent trespassers from entering the grounds and building of your hotel. Enhancing security further with security cameras around your buildings and security alarms will provide an extra layer of protection.
